There is something to be said about simplifying things. You know… barebones, core elements, the essentials. And this is what this session with Kierra + Graeme was all about – barefoot simplicity in the backyard. What was even more special was that they are dear friends of mine and I was so honoured to capture their love for them in such a special way.
change of plans
We weren’t originally planning on this type of session and I honestly didn’t have much time to prepare. Normally I’m familiar with the location we are shooting at and always arrive well before my couples so that I can plan, prepare, and scout out the perfect spots. But this idea to have their session in the backyard of their good friend’s house came days before our session.
a practice in pivoting + adapting
When I first spoke to K + G about their engagement session we had grand plans to head into the city, stop at a bar, grab fancy cocktails, and do some fun flash photography. Visions of elegant glassware, sultry looks, and contrasty imagery against the setting sun flashed in my head. And this would have been an amazing session. But days before their engagement party, Kierra reached out and asked if we could pivot. “Absolutely” I said – I’m always happy to accommodate. So the new plan was to drive to their engagement party together and snap some pics before their guests arrived. Sure, no problem, absolutely… But the methodical, perfectionist, and controlling side of myself was all but comfortable (ha!) My desire for a well-executed plan delivered with precision and excellence was no longer in sight. I had never been to this location before, was arriving with the couple, and didn’t have my vision board thoughtfully planned out well in advance (can you tell I’m a Virgo lol) – this went against what felt natural to me, but it was a great practice in adapting.
We arrived to this gorgeous property down a farm road in Port Alberni that backed onto the mountains. It had just been raining (like, torrential downpour kinda rain) but had stopped right when we pulled up. The skies opened up slightly (though dark clouds still loomed over head) and we knew we had a short window of opportunity. We borrowed boots and trekked through the fresh mud out back to find the right spot and eventually K + G went barefoot.
simple moments of connection
What happened next is what always happens – magic. And I should never doubt that. Every time I shoot, it always comes back that – the simple things that make you, you. The stuff you can’t plan and prepare for. The simple, beautiful moments of connection that is unique to each pair of humans we encounter. And in the end it didn’t matter where we photographed or how prepared I was. What mattered was capturing the love between these two sweet humans and allowing them the space to be who they are.
We played in the muddy grass as the sun peeked her head out to spoil us with some gorgeous light. We took film photographs and finished off a beer and eventually snuck back to the party when the rain started up again. It was perfect timing really. The rest of the night was spent with their nearest + dearest, tears of love shared amongst many, and got to enjoy the most epic charcuterie I’ve ever seen in my life.
It felt fitting to be barefoot in the mud, twirling around, laughing, and having fun. And I think these images perfectly describe that feeling. The barebones of love. I hope you feel the same.
